The main character, Nicole, is well drawn. Young and naive, her impressions and decisions veer all over the place. The book is told only from her point of view so the reader doesn't really know what other characters are thinking. Held my interest all the way through. Feels like the first of a new series. This was a nice rollercoaster through Africa and the US and a great debut novel. Lots of little twists and turns, an interesting ending and a pinch of romance make this a wonderful read!
Interesting plot, über story, mixed in with romance and mystery
Mission of Desire is a books that grips mystery lovers in its first chapter. Graduate student Nicole Kennedy has gone to Africa to teach English over the summer. On the day she arrives in Kenya her bus is attacked, and she's rescued by a mysterious woman who says she works for the U. S. government. What follows is an exciting story which moves from Africa to the Washington D.C. area, involves sexual tension, dangers, and lots of uncertainty as to who is telling the truth. This is a first novel which held me to the very last page.

Young Nicole Kennedy is a grad student with an inherited case of wanderlust. After her father's murder years before she allowed her mother to keep her close to home, until now. She is off to Africa to teach English in an out of the way village for a few weeks. Well, that was the plan anyway until sexy and mysterious Kira Anthony kidnaps her in an attempt to keep her safe from the people who killed her father. There is only one no, make that two, problems. She doesn't know who to trust and she is falling in love with her captor. Whatever will her mother think!
This was an intense, suspenseful mysterious adventure with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. Even when I though I had figured it out and knew the truth, I found not all was so clear after all. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, then fidgeting and worrying the fringe on the couch pillow. I could not believe some of the things Nicole was doing, she was going to get herself killed if she didn't wise up.... Oh Dear, Oh My, Eek! But it was too compelling, I could not stop reading!
This story had a bit of everything, murder, intrigue, cat and mouse spy games, erotic awakenings, sizzling sex, romance, tension and thrills....WHEW! It was just wonderful! Very, very well done Ms. Richards. I do so hope there is another book in the not too far future!!

While some of the story was okay, the majority of it was unreadable due to the author's awkward attempt at creating an immediate intimacy between two characters that were undeveloped. The story felt rushed and unorganized... I've read a lot of lesbian fiction, and often can forgive bad editing and contrived storylines, but this one takes the cake.
