Screw Up. Outcast. Wizard.

I am Blair Sheach, and my life will never be the same. New found powers don't make a hero overnight, but somehow I've become the last line of defense for the city of London. Vampires and demons crawl the streets, magic cops suck at keeping them in line, and the easy job I took to pay my rent has turned into something far more complicated. The cheating deadbeat my client hired me to find just so happens to be the necromancer hell bent on destroying London, and it's up to me to stop him.

I'm out of luck and out of time. And to save my city, the decision I have to make is one I can't take back.

This book contains adult language and violence.

I started this book thinking it was going to have a lot to do with vampires. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't (they are only peripheral). That being said, I ended up skimming a lot of this book. The plot is pretty predictable and the main character is a piece of work. She is supposed to be in her early to mid twenties but she reads like a hormonal teen. She has got crazy mood swings and spends the entire book telling you how sucky her life has been. It felt a lot like someone who constantly fishes for compliments because they are so insecure. This character constantly beats up on herself which, in my opinion, makes her unlikable. I am not going to like a character who doesn't like themselves, throws tantrums like a child, and runs headlong into danger without any knowledge of what she is doing. And could we spend 5 Dec ends not talking about her cheap clothing, plain looks, social awkwardness, etc.? The character's focus on other's perceptions of her her make a lie out of her "I don't care what they think" attitude.

Also, there is almost no backstory or world building to guide us or the character into the universe she lives in, which frankly made the plot largely uninteresting. It felt a lot like I was being dragged along to her next ridiculous move instead of wanting to find out what happens next.

I do plan to read book 2 in the hopes it's a bit more mature. The concept has promise, I just need the character to be made more interesting and less childish.

Grave Mistake Codex Blair Volume 1 Izzy Shows 9781541277854 Books Reviews

Blair Sheach, is a girl that does not know she has magic or can be more than a poor girl that grew up in the foster care system. She finds she has many new powers and a few new friends help along a journey she didn't know she was taking. The books has necromancers, vampires, demons, and so much more. I am excited to find this series and I do look forward to reading the next book.
Izzy Shows has delivered a fast paced urban fantasy tale that will grab you almost immediately and introduce you to some very unusual and unexpected characters. Her writing is smooth and the plot is straight forward. Plenty of action with lots of magic and mayhem. Our heroine Blair first appears as a broken and flawed young woman who quickly must adapt to the paranormal world. I plan to grab the next book in this series as soon as possible.
Blair, orphaned and foster homed, just scrapes by and is aimless. While taking a PI job to get the money for rent, she falls into a horrific chain of events that opens up unrealized mage magic to help the cause. While this was a pretty good premise, it read weirdly odd at times. I find it hard to explain, maybe immature writing at times, not enough backstory, should be a bad ass but isn't, Aidan giving her too much credit too fast, where the heck are all these protectors that don't protect, no explanation of these guys, where did Emily come from? Too many things for more stars.
This is the first book in a series, but it can be read as a complete, standalone novel. Blair is a young woman trying to make ends meet. She has no idea of the magic world around her until she stumbles right into it during a missing spouse case she took trying to make the rent before she gets evicted... again.

Now, London is in danger; Blair and her wizard mentor are going to save it.

I enjoyed how Shows set up the character, the world, and the various interactions. The learning curve was steep and some intriguing characters introduced. Blair is a flawed individual who is doing her best in strange and difficult situations. I look forward to reading about her and the other characters populating this enjoyable version of London.
Interesting idea but inconsistent worldbuilding. Protagonist makes dumb decisions that are inconsistent with her stated character. An Obvious solution is ignored and she jumps to defcon 5 without any input from anyone. Some plot holes and at least one important inconsistency that might just be due to poor editing. Punctuation errors. Won't be reading the next novel
This was fairly good despite being a very average urban fantasy story. I would have liked to get some more details on characters other than Blair, Aidan [that was the wizard's name, right? I finished it yesterday and I've literally already forgotten], and Finn - especially because Aidan and Finn didn't really turn out to be all that important in the end. Also more details on the magic system and the world. I'm sure that's all coming up in the next book but I'm not sure I'm impressed enough to continue the series.

I've read this book and the short story the author gives away with her newsletter and they're both just very average. You've got your typical UF female protagonist who is such an awkward ugly loner! But then she finds out she has magic and is super special! She learns to use it and beat everyone with basically no training! And this demon totally wants to bang her!

One thing I really did like was when they were doing the ritual magic and the girl was like 'you can't kill me, I'm not a virgin' and the guy explained that 'virgin blood' actually means 'blood that has never been used in a ritual before'. Thank you! I feel like this is pretty common knowledge now and we need to get away from that tired old trope, but this is the first book I've seen actually mention it so that was nice.
It started off okay, but the premise rapidly became unrealistic. No way a police officer is going to jeopardize his career by acting so inappropriate with a teen. Just about the time I was fed up with the poorly thought out plot, I hit the end of my rope with the MC. Her poor me, I'm worthless mantra is repeated over and over till you just don't care. I feel like this author should get beta readers or a good editor. Character and plot fail. Gave and extra star in case it somehow got better. I am not gonna waste my time.
